Golf skorts

The skort is the default golf bottom for good reasons, and the one garment where the advertised number is most often misread.

Same stated length, different waistband height — and they sit differently on the leg.

A skort is a short with a skirt panel over it. That construction solves the two problems a skirt alone has — wind, and sitting in a cart — which is why it has become the standard.

What the length number means

Skort lengths compared Three skorts at 15, 18 and 21 inches, measured from the waistband down, showing roughly where each falls on the leg. knee 15″ upper thigh 18″ mid thigh — the default 21″ just above the knee
Roughly where each stated length falls. The number is measured from the waistband down, not as an inseam.

When a skort is sold as 15″, 18″ or 21″, that figure is almost always the outer skirt measured from the waistband down to the hem. It is not an inseam, and it does not describe the built-in short underneath, which is cut shorter and whose length is rarely published.

The consequence is that two skorts of the same stated length can sit differently on your leg, because the waistband is designed to sit at a different height. A skort measured from a high waistband finishes higher on the leg than the same number measured from a low one.

These are approximations that depend on your height and where the brand puts the waistband. Treat them as a starting point, then check the brand's own measurement.

Waistbands change the size you need

Pull-on

No closure, usually a wide knit or elastic band. Sits closer to your true waist measurement and is the more forgiving choice if you are between sizes. It is also the more comfortable option over a long round.

Flat front

A smoother line, often with a concealed panel or a small closure. Looks sharper but has less give — if you are near the top of a size range, take the next size up.

Belt loops

Traditional, and the only option at clubs where a belt is expected. Sizes closest to conventional trouser sizing.

Fit the hip, not the waist

The waist is what people measure and the hip is what actually limits the fit, because the garment has to accommodate you sitting down in a cart with the skirt panel over the short. If your waist says one size and your hip says the next one up, take the larger.

Pockets are not decorative

You need somewhere for a ball, a tee and a marker, reachable without stopping. Check that the pockets are in the short layer rather than the skirt panel — skirt-panel pockets swing and empty themselves.

Quick check Lay a skort you already like flat, measure waistband to hem, and use that number against the brand's chart. It beats guessing from the size letter.
